Our History

The story of the Tucson Osteopathic Medical Foundation begins long before its founding in 1986.

For decades, Tucson General Hospital (TGH) served as the cornerstone of osteopathic medical training and patient care in Southern Arizona. In the 1960s alone, TGH trained 63 interns, nearly 60% of whom remained in the region to practice, helping establish a strong and lasting physician workforce. Over its lifetime, hundreds of interns and residents trained within its walls, creating a ripple effect that continues to shape healthcare in the community today.

When TGH was sold in 1986, TOMF was created to ensure that its legacy would endure. What began as a transition became a transformation, one that shifted from direct clinical care to lasting investment in education, innovation, and community health.

In the years that followed, TOMF expanded its reach:

      • Supporting osteopathic medical students through scholarships tied to service in Southern Arizona
      • Advancing continuing medical education through the Southwestern Conference on Medicine, which has awarded more than 270,000 CME credits since 1991
      • Strengthening community health through grantmaking that supports innovative solutions to real-world health challenges
      • Investing in public health, research, and community-driven initiatives that address real-world challenges

From its earliest days to today, TOMF has remained grounded in a simple but powerful idea:

When you invest in physicians and community health, the impact extends far beyond any one moment…it shapes generations.
